Spider Leg Vein Treatment

What are spider veins?

Spider veins are twisted or swollen veins that are visible under the skin. These veins occur more often in your legs and sometimes on your face and other part of your body. Spider veins affect both men and women but are most likely to be seen in women due to hormonal imbalances caused during puberty, pregnancy and menopause. The other factors which cause spider veins are obesity, lack of physical activity, sitting or standing for a long time or with exposure to the sun.

What causes spider veins?

The actual cause for spider veins remains unknown. One of the probable cause is impaired circulation of impure blood. This is caused when the venous blood (impure blood) that flows through these veins get deviated. Due to this deviation the circulation is interrupted or the blood flow gets restricted causing the vein to swell up. Spider veins are also caused due to weakness in the blood vessel walls that are close to the surface of the skin.

Are spider veins painful?

Spider veins usually do not produce any symptoms but may cause an ache or burning pain especially in the lower extremities after standing for a long time.

Why are spider veins treated?

Spider veins are treated to relieve symptoms and improve appearance.

What are the treatment options for spider veins?

Treatment may include sclerotherapy which involves injecting a solution that causes the veins to scar and close or laser therapy where light energy is focused on the veins causing them to gradually fade.
